Falcons, Lady Falcons Sweep CIAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Saint Augustine’s University swept the CIAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Complex on the Johnson C. Smith University campus Saturday, April 18, 2015.
The Falcons scored 158 points to win their 18th consecutive CIAA men’s championship. Virginia Union University was second with 132.5 points and Johnson C. Smith University finished third with 120 points. The Lady Falcons scored 178 points to capture their 14th CIAA women’s title in 19 years and first since 2010. Winston-Salem State University was second with 161 points and Johnson C. Smith was third with 74 points. The last time the Falcons and Lady Falcons swept the CIAA championships was 2010.
Immanuel Hutchinson (Jr./San Jacinto, CA) of the Falcons was selected CIAA Men’s Track Most Valuable Performer, and Fanta Fofana of the Lady Falcons was selected CIAA Women’s Track MVP. Matthew Huckabee of The Lincoln University was named CIAA Men’s Field MVP and Ebony Moore of Livingstone College was chosen CIAA Women’s Field MVP.
Six Falcons and Lady Falcons won CIAA individual titles after winning their respective events on Saturday. Hutchinson led the SAU men with victories in the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run. The other men’s winners for the Falcons were David Shaw (Sr./Red Springs, NC) in the triple jump, Omar Johnson (Jr./St. Ann, Jamaica) in the 400-meter dash, Daniel Jamieson (Jr./Windsor, CT) in the 100-meter dash and Burkheart Ellis, Jr. (Jr./Raleigh, NC) in the 200-meter dash. For the women, Tia-Adana Belle (So./St. George, Barbados) won the 400-meter hurdles.
The foursome of Khari Herbert (So./Coral Springs, FL), Ellis, Kevaughn Hewitt (Sr./Miramar, FL) and Johnson won the men’s 4×400-meter relay. The quartet of Shamia Lassiter (Jr./Chesapeake, VA), Samantha Woodburn (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica), Shakinah Brooks (So./Raleigh, NC) and Ornella Livingston (Jr./Christiana, Jamaica) captured the women’s 4×100-meter relay in a nation’s best Division II time of 45.17 seconds, and the Lady Falcons’ squad of Belle, Cherrisse Lynch (Sr./Bridgetown, Barbados), Sherri-Ann Ashman (Sr./Brooklyn, NY) and Woodburn also won the 4×400-meter relay.
The other CIAA men’s winners were Andrew Alexander of Johnson C. Smith (javelin throw), Justin Williams of Virginia State University (110-meter hurdles), Patrick Campbell of Johnson C. Smith (400-meter hurdles), Luis Nieves of Virginia Union (5000-meter run) and Huckabee of The Lincoln (discus throw). Johnson C. Smith won the 4×100-meter relay in 40.15 seconds which tied the nation’s best in Division II this season.
The other CIAA women’s winners on Saturday were Tajanel McNeill of Winston-Salem State (triple jump), Kenrisha Brathwaite of Johnson C. Smith (100-meter hurdles), Quanera Hayes of Livingstone (200-meter dash, 400-meter dash), C’Evon Jones of Virginia Union (100-meter dash), Raven Hamilton of Winston-Salem State (800-meter run), Brionna Singleton of Virginia Union (high jump) and Chelsey Fuller of Virginia State (discus throw).
